The start of 2026 has been a mix of new releases and holdovers from late 2025, with a fairly clear split between major studio titles and films that are just continuing to perform steadily rather than breaking out.

At the top end, Captain America: Brave New World and Mickey 17 are the obvious headline releases, sitting in that space where studios are still relying on scale and recognisable IP to bring audiences in. Alongside that, Madame Web continues the run of superhero films, although the response has been more mixed than some of the bigger Marvel titles.

On the UK side, Paddington in Peru continues that family-led success, broad appeal and a well-established brand that still draws audiences in.

What’s just as noticeable is how many films in cinemas aren’t brand new. Titles from late 2025 are still around in some capacity, particularly family films and steady performers, which tend to stay in cinemas longer than expected.

Then you’ve got films like Argylle, Mean Girls, and Night Swim, which sit somewhere in the middle, recognisable, widely marketed, but not necessarily dominating the conversation.

What this lineup really shows is how front-loaded the industry still is. A few big titles carry most of the attention, while everything else either holds on quietly or passes through without much impact.
