Prig was introduced through early coverage in Dec 2023 from The Fan Carpet, alongside a set of stills from Verve Bee Media and Old Lamp Entertainment that gave a clear sense of the project.
Positioned as a Tudor monastery drama, it leans away from the standard polished historical style, instead presenting something more grounded and textured. From what’s been shown, it appears to have been filmed in a small church setting in Greater London, suggesting a lower-budget production, although the scope of the costume and the stills themselves is notably impressive. Old Lamp Entertainment has also worked on several period pieces before, which comes through in the detail.
The story centres around life within a religious order, beginning with the discovery of a body on monastery grounds and the pressure placed on a young prior to uncover the truth before an innocent man is punished.
What’s interesting here is how rare this kind of setup has become. Period monastery dramas in England are usually done on a much larger scale, with broader historical scope, whereas some of the most memorable versions of this setting have come from smaller, character-led murder mysteries like Cadfael, which aired on ITV and followed a monk solving crimes within an abbey setting. There’s something in that format that feels much closer to what Prig is aiming for, and it’s a space that hasn’t really been revisited in the same way for a while.
The project stars Vivien Taylor, Mike Archer, Kevin Ryan, and Shane Robinson.
Since that initial coverage, there hasn’t been any further press or update. The project has been listed as in production on IMDb for over a year, but there’s been no confirmation of release, no additional stills, and no follow-up coverage.
When researching through the companies’ profiles, we’ve also found that they are developing a new streaming platform, Peppers, which currently only has a launch page. There hasn’t been an official press release confirming any connection, but it does suggest that Prig could be positioned as a Peppers original.
For now, it remains a project we’re watching, and one we’re hoping to hear more about soon.
